People Judge a book by its cover. I used to judge people by the books they read. Now, I make out the kind of person one is, by the kind of TV shows they watch. By the way, I don't watch 'VAMPIRE DIARIES', or 'HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER'. :D :D
And all that shit about not judging people; We humans can't help it. People will always judge people, period.
It all started with F.R.I.E.N.D.S., like many other people of my generation. I got it from a dear friend in my 2nd year at college. By the time I finished my engineering, I was hooked!
After the most famous sitcom of American Television (arguably, of course), I was hooked with light comic-detective series like PSYCH (thanks to PP), MONK, WHITE COLLAR etc. And then came 'PRISON BREAK'. Oh wow. I was introduced to a whole new world of intelligent yet thoroughly entertaining story telling. All said and done, I am crazy about stories. Be it my love for books, or my now-fading love for Hollywood movies. Believe me, when you get hooked to a show like 'LOST', 50 minutes each episode, 23 episodes per season, and 6 seasons, a movie just 120 minutes long will not satiate your appetite.
Well, after more police-spy-detective-crime type shows like 'BURN NOTICE', I thought let's diversify. I saw 'CALIFORNICATION', and it was fun while it lasted. I don't think we will ever have that kind of adult mature content on our television channels here in India. My friend Noul told me about 'One Tree Hill', which, inspite of being a regular drama, became an addiction for about 2 weeks.
I never paid so much attention to human anatomy before, but 'BONES' made me go looking for online stores selling life-size 'Human Skeletal Model'. I came so close to buy one too. :p
I recently completed 'Breaking Bad', and the clarity of direction and writing it had, blew me over. By the way, I now feel like I know US states, cities and their cultures better than I know those of Indian states. I hope I don't get deported from India someday. :p
And I broke my rule of not seeing a 1-season old show when 'Da Vinci's Devils' came out. Those British really choose quality over quantity. BBC's 'SHERLOCK' merits special mention here. 3 season, just 3 episodes each. And they aired all 3 episodes of 3rd season within a span of 2 weeks. Now a long, agonizing 1 year wait for next 3!
I used to ask my friends about movies, 'Kya Story Hai'? Now my friends ask me the same question about tv shows. There maybe around 15 TV shows I have already seen, all seasons counted. I guess only worth mentioning get the mention.
My current affliction is 'MAD MEN'. 1960's America. New York. The world of advertising. My plans of getting up early in the morning to go for a run are regularly in conflict these days with that 'One more episode' I see before sleeping late.
I will continue to see movies, and read books, for the love of the "story". But I have to say, these TV shows have made a special place in my Hard Disk, and in my heart & mind too. It is after all, all about a good story, and how it is told.
